Paddle Sports in Singapore

Paddle sports are the most accessible water sports in Singapore. No experience needed, no expensive gear, calm reservoir water to learn on, and a network of government-run outlets (PAssion Wave) that rent equipment by the hour. If you want to try a water sport this weekend without booking lessons or buying gear, paddle is where to start. This hub lists every paddle sport covered on the site: kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, dragon boat, rowing, canoe, and outrigger.

What this section covers

"Paddle sports" means any water sport propelled by a paddle held in your hands, without sail, motor, or cable. The category includes:

  • Kayaking. Sit-on-top, sit-in (closed deck), sea kayaking, touring.
  • Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Recreational, SUP racing, SUP yoga, SUP surfing.
  • Dragon boat. Team-based, traditional roots, both competitive and community scenes.
  • Rowing. Sweep and sculling, competitive and recreational.
  • Canoe. Single-blade paddle, less common locally than kayak but part of the family.
  • Outrigger. Polynesian-origin outrigger canoe, small but active community.

Accessible first paddle

If you've never paddled, the simplest start is a sit-on-top kayak at a PAssion Wave reservoir outlet. Show up, pay a modest rental, get a safety briefing, paddle for an hour. No experience, no certification needed.

  • Kayaking in Singapore. Complete guide to PAssion Wave outlets, rates, the certification path, and what to expect on your first paddle.

Kayaking and SUP

Kayaking is the headline paddle activity. SUP has grown quickly in recent years as a lower-intensity option that doubles as a yoga and fitness platform.

A dedicated SUP guide is coming soon. For now, SUP is available at PAssion Wave @ East Coast and PAssion Wave @ Pasir Ris.

Dragon boat

Dragon boat is Singapore's most active team paddle sport. Crews of 20 paddlers plus a drummer and sweep race across reservoirs and basins. Competitive clubs and recreational community teams run year-round.

  • Dragon Boat in Singapore. Full guide to Singapore Dragon Boat Association, the main races, how to join a club, and training structure.

Rowing

Rowing is smaller than dragon boat locally but has an established competitive scene. The SAF Boathouse at Kallang Basin, together with school and university teams, forms the core of the community.

A dedicated rowing guide is coming soon. Training venues include Kallang Basin, Marina Reservoir, and MacRitchie.

Certifications

Sit-on-top kayaks on sheltered water need no certification. Closed-deck kayaks and sea outlets may require:

  • Star 1 (1-Star). The Singapore Canoe Federation's entry-level certification. Prerequisite for most closed-deck rentals.
  • Star 2 and above. For sea kayaking, more technical conditions, and instructor pathways.

PAssion Wave runs Star Course intakes regularly. See individual outlet phone numbers on our kayaking guide.
