Sailing and Wind Sports in Singapore
Sailing and wind sports are broader than most Singaporeans realise. A free 40-minute sail at Marina Bay, a dinghy rental at Pasir Ris, a kitesurfing lesson at East Coast, a full yacht club membership at Changi. They all sit under the same umbrella: sports that use wind and a sail or kite to move you across water. This hub lists every wind-powered water sport covered on the site.
What this section covers
Wind-powered water sports in Singapore fall into two main groups:
- Classic sailing. Dinghies (Optimist, Laser, PICO, 420) and keelboats (yachts, SM40 racing sailboats). Wind moves a boat that you sit in.
- Wind sports. Windsurfing, kitesurfing, kitefoiling, wing foiling. Wind moves a board that you stand on.
Both share the same fundamental skill: reading wind, managing power, and steering without a motor. The communities overlap, and some venues (East Coast, Changi) offer both.
Getting started (free and cheap)
Singapore has two unusually accessible entry points to sailing that cost nothing or next to nothing.
- DBS Sailing at the Bay. Free, 30-40 minute sail on racing keelboats at Marina Bay. A DBS and Singapore Sailing Federation programme, running since 2013. Ages 7 to 70, no experience needed.
- PAssion Wave @ Pasir Ris. Rent a PICO dinghy by the hour. 9am-6pm Wed-Sun. A first self-directed sail in a forgiving boat. Affordable and accessible.
Classic sailing
Dinghies, keelboats, and yachts: boats with sails, moved by wind. Most of the competitive and recreational sailing scene in Singapore uses classic rigged boats.
- DBS Sailing at the Bay. Free public programme on SM40 racing sailboats at Marina Bay.
More guides coming soon on SAF Yacht Club, ONE°15 Marina, the PAssion Wave PICO programme at Pasir Ris, and the Singapore Sailing Federation's Basic Sailing Course pathway.
Wind sports
Board-based wind sports. You stand on a board, a kite or sail provides the pull, and you move across the water.
- Kitesurfing in Singapore. East Coast Park spots, IKO-certified schools, wind seasons (best: Dec-Mar), typical costs.
More guides coming soon on windsurfing (PAssion Wave @ East Coast is the main venue), wing foiling, and kitefoiling.
Clubs and venues
The main venues for sailing and wind sports in Singapore:
- Marina Bay. DBS Sailing at the Bay on SM40 racing sailboats. Customs House pontoon.
- Pasir Ris. PAssion Wave (PICO and LASER dinghies, beginner-friendly).
- East Coast. PAssion Wave (LASER, windsurfing), plus kitesurfing schools (JC Kitesurf, Singapore Kitesurfing).

The Singapore Sailing Federation (SSF) governs the sport nationally and runs the certification pathway (Basic Sailing Course Level 1 onwards).
Progression path
A sensible path from first sail to independent sailor:
- Try it free. DBS Sailing at the Bay. Confirms you enjoy being on a sailboat.
- Dinghy rental. PAssion Wave PICO at Pasir Ris. Your first self-directed sail in a forgiving boat.
- Structured course. SSF Basic Sailing Course Level 1 for a recognised certification.
- Pick a direction:
- Competitive dinghy racing. Join a Laser or 420 fleet at a club.
- Keelboat sailing. Crew on bigger boats via sailing membership.
- Wind sports. Kitesurfing or windsurfing lessons at East Coast.
- Yacht ownership. Berthing membership at a marina.
Not everyone follows the full path. Plenty of recreational sailors stay at BSC Level 1 and sail happily for years.
