SG-Coach Level 1 Swimming Programme: A Plain-English Guide

If you want to coach swimming in Singapore, the SG-Coach Level 1 Swimming Programme is a coaching certification offered by Singapore Aquatics, the national governing body for aquatic sports. The programme is SkillsFuture Credit-eligible. This guide walks through what the course covers, the two pathways available, eligibility, the swim test you have to pass to get in, the 2026 intake schedule, and how to register, all derived from the official Singapore Aquatics course pages.

SG-Coach Level 1 in 60 seconds

  • What it is: Singapore Aquatics' coaching certification for swimming, created in partnership with CoachSG and NROC (per the official course description).
  • Two pathways: Full Integration (theory + practical) or Technical (practical only, no theory modules).
  • Format: Blended. Online theory modules, classroom sessions, pool sessions, then a practicum attachment at an appointed centre.
  • Session times: 7 pm to 9 pm per the schedule pages, with the course briefing slightly shorter (7 pm to 7:30 pm on the Technical pathway page).
  • Attendance: 100% required. Miss one session, get withdrawn.

The two pathways: Full Integration vs Technical

SG-Coach Level 1 has two routes. Pick the one that matches your starting point.

  Full Integration Technical
What's included Theory + practical components Practical only, no theory modules
Includes online theory Yes. Foundational Sport Science + SG-Coach Theory Level 1 (e-learning) No. Practical and assessment only
Lifesaving cert needed Yes, within 3 years of validity Yes, Lifesaving Certificate 1 specifically
SkillsFuture Eligible Eligible. Full funding listed
Time commitment Longer. Several weeks of theory + classroom + pool, then practicum Shorter. Practical sessions + practicum

Singapore Aquatics doesn't publicly state which pathway is intended for whom. The Full Integration page describes the route as comprising Theory (Foundational Sport Science + SG-Coach Level 1 Theory) plus Technical components. The Technical page lists only the practical sessions. Pick based on what credentials you already hold and what theory you want included; if in doubt, ask SAQ when you register your interest.

Eligibility and prerequisites

Both pathways share the same baseline requirements.

  • Age: 18 years and above by calendar year
  • Membership: Register as a TeachSAQ or CoachSAQ member with Singapore Aquatics for course tracking
  • Lifesaving: Full Integration page lists "Lifesaving Certificate (within 3 years validity)". Technical page lists "Lifesaving Certificate 1" specifically and links to slss.org.sg/lifesaving-courses
  • Swim Proficiency Assessment: Pass the four-stroke swim test (details below). Listed on the landing page as the entry requirement
  • Online theory (Full Integration only): Complete the e-learning modules before face-to-face sessions begin

If you are starting from zero on lifesaving, plan for that course first. Refer directly to the Singapore Life Saving Society for current course duration, content, and fees.

The Swim Proficiency Assessment

Before you can enrol, you have to demonstrate you can actually swim. The Swim Proficiency Assessment is a four-stroke evaluation: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Singapore Aquatics holds these at Jalan Besar Swimming Complex.

For the August and September 2026 intakes, the assessment dates are:

  • 3 June 2026 (Wednesday), Jalan Besar, Sitting #1
  • 8 June 2026 (Monday), Jalan Besar, Sitting #2
  • 10 June 2026 (Wednesday), Jalan Besar, Sitting #3
  • 15 June 2026 (Monday), Jalan Besar, Sitting #4
  • 17 June 2026 (Wednesday), Jalan Besar, Sitting #5

The official landing page states you "have to register and participate in our upcoming Swim Proficiency Assessment to register for the course". Singapore Aquatics says the specific passing requirement (distance, technique standards) is shared when you register your interest. They do not publish the standard publicly. Register your interest first to get the actual requirements before training to a guess.

What you actually learn

The curriculum runs across both pathways, with Full Integration adding the theory modules at the front.

E-learning modules (Full Integration only)

  • Foundational Sport Science: The CoachSG cross-sport theory base. Anatomy, training principles, athlete development
  • SG-Coach Theory Level 1: Coaching values, the coaching process, building positive sport culture

Classroom and pool sessions (both pathways)

  • Course briefing on Zoom. What to expect, how the assessments work
  • Values and Principles in Sport. Safe Sport, ethics, building healthy coaching relationships
  • Lesson Planning and Risk Assessment. How to structure a session and identify hazards before they cause harm
  • Effective Coaching Practices and Strategies. Pool-based session on how to actually run a swimming lesson with feedback loops, drills, and corrections
  • Hydrodynamics in Swimming. Pool-based session on the physics of moving through water, plus the four-stroke swim assessment
  • Coaching Swimming Mock Assessment. Practise the assessment format with feedback before it counts

Assessments and attachment

  • In-Course Micro-Coaching Assessment (ICA): You coach a short session under observation. The first attempt is arranged by Singapore Aquatics. If you need to retake it, you self-book around your own schedule
  • Practicum Attachment: Supervised teaching at an SAQ-appointed centre. The location and duration depend on the centre that takes you
  • Final Coaching Assessment: Held at the attachment location after you complete the supervised hours. You submit your available dates for assessment

How the course actually runs

Three things shape the experience.

Blended learning. You don't sit in one room for a week. The theory is online, the classroom modules are in person on weekday evenings, the pool work is at a venue confirmed closer to the intake date, and the practicum happens at whichever centre takes you. You manage the schedule across multiple locations.

Evening sessions. Most modules run from 7 pm to 9 pm. The course briefing on Zoom is shorter (often 7 pm to 7:30 pm). This makes it workable around a day job, but it also means you commit several weeknights in a row.

Total commitment to attendance. Singapore Aquatics flags 100% attendance as a hard requirement on every course page. They mean it. If you cannot make every listed session, defer to a later intake. This isn't a course where you make up missed work later.

Assessment and certification

You pass three checkpoints before you walk away with the certificate.

  1. In-Course Micro-Coaching Assessment. A short observed coaching demonstration. You apply what the course taught: lesson planning, technique cueing, swimmer safety. Pass this before moving to the practicum
  2. Practicum Attachment. Supervised teaching hours at an SAQ-appointed centre. Real swimmers, real lessons, with a senior coach watching
  3. Final Coaching Assessment. The end-of-course evaluation. Held at your attachment centre once your supervised hours are complete

Pass all three with full attendance through the course modules and you receive the Singapore Coach Excellence Programme Swimming Level One Certificate. You're listed in the National Registry of Coaches as an SG-Coach Level 1 Swimming holder.

SkillsFuture funding

Both pathways are SkillsFuture Credit eligible. The Technical pathway page states the course is "SkillsFuture Credit-eligible (FULL FUNDING)". The Full Integration page marks the course as SkillsFuture Credit-eligible without the FULL FUNDING qualifier.

Singapore Aquatics does not publish a fixed fee on the public course pages. Confirm the current fee and the SkillsFuture application steps with them directly when you register your interest.

For SkillsFuture Credit eligibility rules (including the base credit amount, top-ups, and Singaporean/PR/foreigner eligibility), the authoritative source is skillsfuture.gov.sg.

2026 intake schedule

Two intakes are confirmed for the second half of 2026, both for Technical or Full Integration learners.

Specific session dates and venues are marked TBC on the official schedules and are confirmed closer to each intake. Lock the assessment date in June first. The intake confirmation flows from there.

What happens after you certify

SG-Coach Level 1 is the entry-level award in the SG-Coach swimming pathway. Singapore Aquatics has not published Level 2 or Level 3 details on the pages we audited, so check the TeachSAQ section for higher-level course information when you're ready to progress.

Where the certification gets recognised depends on the employer. Singapore Aquatics-affiliated swim clubs and squads use SG-Coach as their credential of reference. Private swim schools, SwimSafer providers, condos, and corporate programmes vary in what they accept; ask the specific organisation what they require before you commit to a single credential path.

For a side-by-side view of SG-Coach against other swimming instructor credentials, the swimming instructor certification guide on this site compares the major options.

Register your interest

Singapore Aquatics runs registration through an interest form. They contact you when the next intake opens and confirm the swim assessment slot, course fee, and SkillsFuture documentation steps.

Frequently asked questions

Is SG-Coach Level 1 the same as a swimming instructor licence?

SG-Coach Level 1 is Singapore Aquatics' coaching certification for swimming. SAQ is the national governing body for aquatic sports. Whether it's accepted as your "instructor licence" depends on the employer. Confirm with the school, club, or programme you want to coach with.

Should I take Full Integration or Technical?

Per the official course pages: Full Integration includes Theory (Foundational Sport Science + SG-Coach Level 1 Theory) plus the technical components. Technical is practical only, with no theory modules. Singapore Aquatics doesn't publicly state which pathway is intended for whom; ask SAQ when you register your interest if you're not sure which fits your starting point.

How much does it cost?

Singapore Aquatics doesn't publish a fixed fee on the public course pages. Both pathways are SkillsFuture Credit-eligible. The Technical pathway page is marked as "FULL FUNDING". Confirm the current fee and SkillsFuture application steps with SAQ when you register your interest.

Do I need a lifesaving certificate before applying?

Yes. The Full Integration page requires a lifesaving certificate within 3 years of validity. The Technical page specifically lists Lifesaving Certificate 1 and links to slss.org.sg/lifesaving-courses. Get this in hand before the intake opens.

Can I miss a session if I'm sick?

The official pages state 100% attendance is required. The landing page explicitly says "please also do make sure you can commit to ALL the dates listed in the batch schedule as 100% attendance will be necessary." Only register if you can attend every listed date.

How long does it take to complete?

Singapore Aquatics doesn't publish a total duration estimate. The taught modules run on TBC dates per the schedule pages, then the practicum attachment runs at an appointed centre on a timeline that depends on the centre, and the final assessment is booked separately after attachment hours are complete. Ask SAQ for an indicative timeline when you register your interest.

Where can I work after getting SG-Coach Level 1?

Where SG-Coach is accepted varies by employer. Singapore Aquatics-affiliated clubs and squads use SG-Coach as their reference credential. Private swim schools, SwimSafer providers, condos, and corporate teaching programmes set their own credential requirements. Ask the specific organisation what they require.

Is this the same as the SwimSafer 2.0 Instructor Course?

No. The SwimSafer 2.0 Instructor Course is a separate qualification administered for delivering the national SwimSafer water safety programme. SG-Coach Level 1 is a broader swimming coach certification offered by Singapore Aquatics. Whether you need both depends on what you intend to coach. Confirm with the relevant body for the role you want.

SingaporeAquatics.com is an independent educational guide. The SG-Coach Level 1 Swimming Programme is run by Singapore Aquatics, the national governing body for aquatic sports.
