Lifesaving Courses in Singapore

Lifeguard rescue training in pool with rescue tube

Lifesaving certifications in Singapore are administered by the Singapore Life Saving Society (SLSS), which is affiliated with the International Life Saving Federation. These courses teach water rescue skills, resuscitation, and emergency response in aquatic environments.

Who Needs a Lifesaving Certificate?

  • Swimming instructors -- most swim schools and public pools require it
  • Lifeguards -- mandatory for employment at pools and beaches
  • Competitive swimmers -- some clubs encourage it as part of development
  • Anyone who wants practical water rescue skills for personal safety

Bronze Medallion

The most commonly required certification for swimming instructors in Singapore.

  • What it covers: rescue approaches, towing techniques, defensive strategies, CPR, first aid in aquatic emergencies
  • Prerequisites: ability to swim 400m continuously, tread water for 2 minutes
  • Duration: 2 to 3 days (usually over a weekend)
  • Cost: $180 to $250
  • Validity: 2 years, renewable through re-assessment

Other SLSS Awards

  • Survive and Save -- introductory water safety for younger swimmers (from age 8)
  • Bronze Cross -- advanced rescue skills beyond Bronze Medallion
  • Distinction Award -- the highest SLSS lifesaving qualification
  • Pool Lifeguard Award -- specifically for professional lifeguard employment

Where to Take Courses

SLSS-affiliated training centres run courses regularly across Singapore. Courses are typically held at public swimming complexes. Check the Singapore Life Saving Society website for the current schedule and approved training providers.

Tips for the Course

  • Be comfortable swimming 400m before you sign up -- the course moves fast
  • Practice treading water. The endurance component catches people off guard
  • The CPR/first aid component is done on land. Wear clothes you can get wet and dry in
  • Bring your own goggles and towel
